How to Treat Oily, Dry and Combination Skin Conditions
Skin conditions have three main categories. The conditions are named oily, dry, and combination. They all affect us differently and it is best to know how to treat each one.
The Need to Know About Dry Skin
The cause of dry skin has to do with a lack of moisture in the outermost layer of one's skin. What consists of this skin layer are natural lipids, or fatty substances. They prevent moisture from escaping. This in turn leaves the skin soft and supple. These substances locking in moisture can be removed resulting in dry skin that has symptoms such as fine lines or cracks, a feeling of skin tightness, and a rough rather than a smooth texture. In extreme cases deep fissures may pop out that have the potential to bleed.
To prevent this from happening here are some helpful tips. First moisturize daily. Without rubbing too hard with your towel, pat yourself dry after showering. When the skin is still a little damp, apply the moisturizer all over your neck and face using upward strokes. It is worth noting that short, lukewarm baths are much better for dry skin than long, hot ones that strip away the body's natural moisture barriers.
The Need to Know About Oily Skin
Sebaceous glands in the skin producing an excessive amount of skin oil, or sebum, are what cause oily skin. These glands are most found in the neck, face, chest and back regions. These oils are necessary for a healthy skin texture. When they are overproduced however, the oily skin symptoms of shininess, blemishes and pimples show up on the body.
The best way to treat oily skin is to be able to remove the excess oil while leaving intact those fatty acids that help maintain the proper functioning and protection of our skin. This is performed through gentle cleansing. It is best to avoid soap as it is prone to stripping the skin of its natural oils. One should use a cleanser that has a low pH level and does not provoke any skin irritation. There is no reason to overdo it. Washing oily skin effectively can be done with just two cleansing sessions a day.
The Need to Know About Combination Skin
The third type of skin condition is called combination skin. As the name says, this condition involves a mixture of both oily and dry skin affecting different parts of the body. Usually what is found are oily areas covering what is called the T-zone. This zone covers the forehead running down through the nose, mouth, and chin. These areas are most likely going to end up with characteristics of being shiny, feeling greasy, and consisting of pimples and blackheads. The remaining sections are characterized by a feeling of tightness after washing. They will look flaky and have a rough texture.
How to treat this tricky skin condition? To begin with use a gentle, water-soluble cleanser that does not leave you with feelings of skin tightness or dryness. Mildly foaming or gel-based cleansers are known to work best for combination skin. A necessity for proper cleansing of this skin type is to avoid bar soap. They overly dry your skin while also clogging the skin's pores. One should use a sunscreen with UVA-protecting ingredients daily. Using a skin treatment product like a moisturizer full of antioxidants and containing ingredients that mimic the structure of healthy skin is the advised way to eliminate the dry sections. Oily skin products that don't cause irritation and are pH-correct are best applied at least once a day. Facial skin products that consist of benzoyl peroxide are advised to be applied topically if one has a tendency to get blemishes as part of their combination condition.
Of all the skincare products out there, there is one that can be applied to all these skin conditions.
