How Eczema Can Affect You and What You Can Do About It
The word eczema comes from a Greek term that has the meaning of, 'to boil over'? Eczema is generally applied to a wide range of persistent skin conditions, but usually will refer to skin rashes that are pronounced by itching, swelling, and flaky or crusty red skin scales. These skin rashes will effectively modify the appearance, color and texture of any of the body's affected parts.
The different forms of dermatitis, meaning inflammation of the skin, that make up eczema include those that are hereditary, those brought on by a specific material that causes allergy or irritates the skin, and then those that are brought on by bacterial infection.
Atopic dermatitis is that which derives from purely hereditary means. It will mainly show up in significant measure throughout childhood. However it can unfortunately stay with you throughout your whole adult life. This condition can be particularly troublesome for a few weeks or months to then subside for significant period of time before a second outbreak would appear.
The first signs of its symptoms is the skin becoming itchy and inflamed. Portions of the skin will be red and swollen, and under the worse conditions, cracked. Under the worst case scenario, the skin scales will harden and crust over themselves, oozing out tissue fluid. The relieving news is that even at this point, atopic dermatitis will not be dangerous to one's health. It is simply the extreme form of a nonthreatening hereditary skin condition that is recommended to be treated with a cortisone cream or any other effective natural skin product.
Contact dermatitis on the other hand, is caused by external factors that will brush up against the skin and irritate it due to its inherent properties. Popularly known cases of contact dermatitis include poison ivy, poison oak, and reactions to costume jewelry involving nickel. At the very least, the symptoms that arise from this skin condition are relegated to the area that was affected by the external material that caused the allergy. This is the positive advantage to atopic dermatitis which can spread all over the body due to its inherent cause of aggravation.
Provided that the skin is not newly exposed to the aggravating substance, its symptoms will eventually fade away. The symptoms from contact dermatitis, albeit they are localized, are particularly bothersome. They result in rashes that are largely burning or itching, and will take days to weeks to finally leave one's system.
The best piece of advice to avoid contact dermatitis is to find the external agent that causes the problem in the first place, and then to avoid it at all costs. Other dermatitis, rosacea, and psoriasis treatment products are topical steroids, including over the counter 1% hydrocortisone and many prescription-strength skin creams.
The last category of bacterial infections is mainly found within a skin condition referred to as impetigo. This skin condition affects mostly preschool aged children in addition to those who play close contact sports such as wrestling and rugby. What will usually cause impetigo to pop us is staph or strep genes. Poor body hygiene plays little or not role. Effective treatments include prescription strength mupirocin along with oral antibiotics.
