Eliminate Severe Acne: Treatment Options

by Susan Lane

There are two types of categories for acne, severe and mild. Blackheads, whiteheads and pustules are some of the mild types of acne, these are also the most common type of acne. Although in this article we are going to focus on one of the sever types of acne, cystic acne.

Cystic acne is considered the worst form of acne that exists. It is more serious and damaging compared to other forms of acne such as pimples or whiteheads. This is due to the fact that the infection penetrates deeply within the skin layers and can cause very large and painful nodules. It is also known as acne vulgaris. Acne cysts or acne nodules, are formed when sebum cannot properly outflow to the surface of the skin and causes lesions to the cells lining the walls of the sebum canals. Our body fights the infection producing inflammation of the area where the pores have been blocked. When there are a lot of bacteria, the immune system reacts more powerfully; this often results in a larger size pimple, better known as an acne cyst.

This type of reaction causes the body to release sebum. Excess amounts of this turn into a rich feeding ground for bacteria that lives inside the skin follicles or on the surface of the skin. The area gets so aggravated by the chemicals issued by the breakdown of sebum that the pimple may grow to be as large as five millimeters in diameter due to inflammation and a surplus of bacteria and oil.

Understanding Cystic Acne

Facial cysts can become even worse thanks to a condition called retention keratosis. When skin cells, especially those that cover hair follicles are disposed improperly, the retention occurs. Improper disposal of cells leads to the clogging of these follicles. The bacteria may then pass over to other areas which causes acne cysts to worsen.

Nodulocystic acne may be produced by the action of hormones. Certain hormones such as testosterone and androgen can cause the production of sebum to increase. It is necessary that the sebum ducts be clear in order to prevent them from getting clogged and decreasing the risk of the cysts formation. The lifestyle and the genetic background of a person also influence the severity of acne. Even stress can enhance acne problems.

Treating acne cysts is possible despite the fact that they are very serious and the severe acne condition seems beyong the possibilities of products for severe cystic acne treatment. Many dermatologists prescribe a drug called Accutane, and is one taken in the form of a tablet. It works by reducing the size of the oil glands and thereby controlling acne production. Acne may be cleared with this product however some people who have taken Accutane experienced depression as a side effect. It is recommended that this drug only be taken if all other methods have failed.

Another option can be provided by a dermatologist and it uses cortisone as the active ingredient. They are extremely effective, painless and instantly reduce redness and inflammation. Consequently, the pimple is reduced and thus becomes less visible. It is possible that after undergoing this procedure the skin may show temporary discoloration and bleeding over the area treated.

It is complicated to cure cystic acne however there are treatments for it. This type of acne requires a special acne skin care treatment since some could worsen the condition. Cystic acne can also be treated with natural products designed to improve the skin in many ways.
